Huangyao Ancient Town is located in the northeast of Zhaoping County, 200,000 m away from Guilin. The ancient town has a history of hundreds of years and is one of the most popular attractions for foreign tourists.
Huangyao Ancient Town was built in the Wanli Period during the Ming Dynasty. It reached its heyday in the reign of Emperor Qianlong during the middle Qing Dynasty. The first name of the families living in the town are mainly Huang and Yao, hence the name of the ancient town. In this town you can find mountains with caves, temples, ancestor hills, old trees, tables and pavilions with ancient style. At each corner of the town, you can see the typical scene of Chinese old town.
What to see in Huangyao Ancient Town
Being reputed as the “dreamland for families”, Huangyao Ancient Town covers an area of 3,600 square meters. The town features by karst landform. The streets of the ancient town are floored with stones.
Ming Style Relics
There are about 20 temples, 10 pavilions and many natural attractions in the ancient town. The sites here were all constructed in Ming Dynasty. Famous spots include Wenming Pavilion, Xingning Temple, Shizi Temple, Ancient Performance Platform, Wu family ancestral hall, Zuolong Temple, Dailong Bridge, etc.
The natural attractions include eight large ones and 24 small ones with about 20 well-preserved temples and more than 10 pavilions. These sites are all built in the Ming Dynasty style. Famous ones include Wenming Pavilion, Xingning Temple, Shizi Temple, Ancient Performance Platform, Wu family ancestral hall, Zuolong Temple, Dailong Bridge, etc.
Wenming Pavilion
Wenming pavilion was built on the mountain. The pavilion is a worship site for locals. There is a platform not far way from the Wenming Pavilion. It is a place to pray for rainy days in the drought season. The platform offers visitor a broad view of leisure countryside scene.
Zhou’s Family Reservoir
Zhou’s family reservoir is on the direction to Zhaoping from Huangyao Ancient Town. The reservoir has about twenty bamboo rafts which visitor could use freely. Along the way to the reservoirs, there is beautiful scenery on both side of the road. A tender picture of special yellow soil, brick wall, zigzag field will full of your eyes on you way here.
What to eat in Haungyao
- Huangyao tofu is a major feature of the local dishes, stuffed bean curd and bean curd, both should try.
- Huangyao still fresh mushroom, mushroom fried rice cake, vegetables also Xiantian, carp and grass carp markets.
- Huangyao also sell tea; Huang Yao famous lobster sauce, for seasoning.
How to Get There
By train: Take trains to Hezhou, and then to Huangyao Ancient Town by bus. One of the convenient train is No. K9336 / K 9337 (Nanning – Hezhou).
By bus: Take bus from Guangzhou to Hezhou, 5 buses daily. Take buses from Guilin to Hezhou, 2 buses daily.
